Harrison Place is a lovely wooded subdivision of custom homes off North Harrison Avenue, in north Cary NC. Originally developed by nearby SAS Institute in the late 1980′s, Harrison Place is in a superb location, central to many points of interest in the Triangle. Downtown Raleigh, NC State University, North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina State Fairgrounds, RBC Center arena, Carter Finley Stadium, Umstead Park, RDU Airport, Research Triangle Park, and various other shopping and service opportunities are all within minutes of Harrison Place.

The North Carolina Zoological park is an easy day trip from Cary, NC. It is only about 65 miles from our home near Davis Drive in Cary. This post is from 2009, and refreshed a little………

We went out on Saturday. Sky was bright blue, and the fall leaves were coming into their own. And the temperature was perfect for strolling through the habitats. We go to one entrance and ride the tram back to the other entrance and walk back to where we started, with lunch on the way.

Fieldstone Village in Cary NC is a pleasant affordable neighborhood near the corner of Green Level West Road and North Carolina Highway 55.

 Fieldstone Village was built out by Washington Homes of NC and Bill Clark Construction in the mid- to late-1990's.  The neighborhood is dotted with ranch homes offering one-level living, as well as traditional two story homes.  One and two stall garages are typical, as well as lots ranging from .25 acre up to a full acre.

Fieldstone Village enjoys a great location, with easy access to retail and services in Cary and Apex, employment centers in the Research Triangle Park, RTP, and also recreation opportunities via the Town of Cary Greenway system.

White Oak Estates homeowners enjoy lot sizes that are nearly impossible to duplicate in Cary area neighborhoods today. Lots of 2 acres up to over 4 acres can be expected in the neighborhood. This allows for woods, open space, and elbow room.

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary NC is a great stop off for a shady stroll in the woods.  And, be careful!  At Hemlock Bluffs, you are always at risk of learning something about nature!

Located south of downtown Cary, at 2616 Kildaire Farm Road, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is easily accessed from surrounding neighborhoods, and also by visitors to Harold D Ritter Park, via the Swift Creek Greenway.  The Preserve and Stevens Nature Park combined with other parcels owned by the State of North Carolina and the Town of Cary totals well over 100 acres of lovely wooded scenery.

While any shady walk in the woods is nice on a 93 degree Cary Spring day, this stroll is extra nice due to the paths and walkways that were constructed, often supported by local Boy Scouts working for Eagle Scout rank. 

Additionally, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is home to a lovely stand of Eastern Hemlock trees, which are over 200 miles from their typical growing environment.  The steep north-facing bluffs help buffer the heat of summer and provide the hemlocks a reasonably suitable growing environment.  Recently, the hemlocks were infested with a parasite, and efforts by the Town of Cary and the Friends of Hemlock Bluffs, the parasite was controlled.  Hemlocks are truly a graceful conifer, and that was good news.

Indoor and outdoor classrooms and group educational programs are very popular at Hemlock Bluffs.  The preserve and Nature Park revolve around teaching, learning, and appreciation for the natural surroundings.

Cary’s Harold D. Ritter Park is located at 301 Lochmere Drive West, which is off Kildaire Farm Road.

The 20 acre park offers Town of Cary residents, particularly residents of nearby Lochmere, Williamsburg Commons, and Crescent Arbors apartments, room to roam. Among the park amenities are two ball fields, a basketball court, a comfort station, access to Swift Creek Greenway, a large playground area, a huge picnic shelter, and open play fields.
Lovely landscaping adds to the appeal, as many stately crape myrtles decorate the park.

Ritter Park is tucked away, but easily accessed and the recreational opportunities and beauty of the surroundings make it a very popular Cary destination.

Veterans Freedom Park, Cary NC 

The Veterans Freedom Park in Cary NC is located at the corner of Cary Parkway and North Harrison Avenue, on the north side of Cary.  It was dedicated July 1, 2003, but has not been completed to date.  I rather like it as a quiet place, as it is, for reflection.

The lush grounds of the park, and the size of 11 acres help the visitor focus on quiet and peace, rather than the busy N Harrison Avenue thoroughfare.  That removal from the daily hubbub seemes fitting, in accordance with appreciation and remembrance of the sacrifices made by so many.

Veterans Freedom Park has been spurred by commitment of SAS Institute to donate the 11 acres to the National Veterans Freedom Park Foundation and to pay to install a 120 foot granite spire memorial, in addition to the existing monuments.

Wake County West Regional Library, Cary NC

Wake County’s West Regional Library at 4000 Louis Stephens Drive in Cary is a 5 year old public library branch serving many neighborhoods in West Cary. It is one of twenty library branches in the Wake County Public Library System.

Adjacent to Carpenter Village, with Greenway Access, West Regional Library is an attractive structure, in contemporary design.
(Unfortunately, I got there after hours the other evening, and had to settle for exterior photos. Still, they are nice.)

Myriad services available at the Wake County Libraries make them a centerpiece for the surrounding community. West Regional Library was keenly anticipated prior to its opening in 2006.

Green Hope Elementary School Park, Cary NC

Green Hope Elementary School Park in Cary NC is a small park, built in partnership between the Town of Cary, Wake County, and the Wake County Public School System.
As land is acquired for schools, over the last several years, Wake County has often been able to acquire extra land, and provide park opportunities to the local communities the schools serve.  Nice and efficient.

Green Hope Elementary School Park  provides simple facilities.  There are three soccer fields, four sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, a picnic shelter, and a small play area.  The setting of the common areas, central and in a grove of trees, makes the park very attractive.
 

Preston Village adjoins the park, and homes are visible around the edges of the park.
Across the street, Louis Stephens Drive, you will find the Cary Tennis Park complex, a well-known local destination for serious tennis play and tournaments.

Black Creek Greenway in Cary, NC, is one of the most popular greenway trail installations in Cary.

Winding from Umstead Park and Lake Crabtree at the farthest north end of Cary, the 5.60 mile Black Creek Greenway is nearly completed in its extension to Bond Park.  Popular with walkers and mountain bikers, the Greenway offers shaded paved areas, benches, and lovely scenery as it passes through North Cary, crossing streams and climbing hills through wooded natural areas.

Highlights along the Greenway are connections to West Cary Middle School campus, North Cary Park, R S Godbold Park and Dog Park, SK8 Cary, a pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks along NW Maynard Road, and a path between Oakwood Heights and Coles Creek neighborhoods.

When complete, the Black Creek Greenway and Cary's White Oak Greenway, will together comprise 15 miles of continuous trail through Cary, from Umstead Park to the American Tobacco Trail.

Richard V Godbold Park is another gem from the good folks at Cary Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources.

Located at 2050 NW Maynard Road, Godbold Park is well-situated to serve the residents of central and north Cary. And it connects to the Black Creek Greenway, which will allow walkers and bikers to travel between Godbold Park and other recreational opportunities.

Godbold Park offers 6 lighted tennis courts, two basketball courts, a kiddie playground, picnic tables, trails, and easy access for everyone in the area.

The entrance to Godbold Park also gives access to parking for the adjacent SK8 Cary Skate Park and the Cary Dog Park

Sk8 Cary is a great facility to give local skateboarders opportunities to practice and show off without the dangers of streets and sidewalks.

The Cary Dog Park lets the pups do what they do best: run around and play and make friends and sniff interesting stuff.

 Tanglewood is one of the older affordable neighborhoods in Cary NC.  Tanglewood was developed in the mid-1960's, and is in a great central Cary location, near Cary Towne Center Mall, Cary High School, Lions Park, Cary Swim Club, and Cary's Dunham Park.

Homes in Tanglewood, built in the 1960's and early 1970's are ranches, split-levels, traditional, and enjoy large lots.  As well as mature landscaping, the neighborhood was developed at a time when builders worked around large trees, rather than scraping them off the lot.  The result is a wonderful green canopy and deep shade from lovely trees for most homes.

The Reserve in Cary NC is a neighborhood of move up homes in West Cary, off NC Highway 55.  The Reserve was developed from the mid-1990's to 2003, and built out by a group of respected local custom home builders.

Homes in The Reserve vary from 2800 to over 5000 square feet, with all the features one would expect in an upscale home in the $500,000 range, open floorplans, wood floors, granite upgrades, and heavy molding packages.
One of the most popular features is the size of lots in The Reserve.  With lot sizes ranging from .33 acre to common .46 acre lots, and larger, the property sizes are larger than many newer subdivisions offer.

Nearby Cary Neighborhoods include Tanglewood, Greenwood Forest, Irongate, and Coronado Village.
